Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "critical" level.

Alarming Pollution Levels

Several parts of the capital showed an AQI exceeding 500, which equals 10x the healthy threshold established by the global health authority.

Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x above safe levels.

Firecracker Ban and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the dangerous smog that covers the capital as winter sets in.

However earlier this year, the current local government appealed to the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and environment".

Judicial Ruling and Implementation

To the disappointment of environmental and health activists, the court agreed to the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was widespread violation of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Many air quality sensors throughout Delhi registered air quality spiking around late evening to extremely hazardous measurements observed during the festival in at least the past three years.

International Implications

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing worsening atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the events.

Persistent Pollution Problem

Extremely elevated concentrations of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to spike to significantly exceeding the worst readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the world's most polluted city.

Diverse Contamination Factors

This crisis in Delhi is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and pollutants from farm burning in nearby states of farming communities.

Within these states, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating toxic smog that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air sets in.

Health and Financial Impact

The economic and health consequences on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air results in increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can result in malignancies.

The pollution is projected to be causing 10,000 premature deaths annually in the capital.
