Just as the recent storm hit the northern region the prior day, Manchester City blew United aside at the Etihad. It was a convincing three goal victory for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their championship potential as they strengthened their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Setbacks for United

This result marked successive WSL defeats for the United manager's side for the initial occasion since May 2024, putting them seven points off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

Manchester United's ability to manage league and European football with a limited squad has been a hotly discussed subject since they qualified for the European competition. Considering the calendar, it always seemed this was the week that would truly test this ability. Unfortunately for the visitors, they looked fatigued from start to finish, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

The United manager had sought to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all brought vigor, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the substitutes caused surprise.

City, in comparison, have no similar loading concerns. The City coach made one adjustment from last week’s win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her first start since healing from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The pressure started to build for the United boss and his squad from the first whistle. This was a demonstration of the strength from City whose dynamic attack manipulated and dismantled the opposition with a superb first half showing that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

This put the hosts in a commanding position and left United disorganized. Before this encounter, United had allowed just six in this domestic competition but they disintegrated in the face of City’s offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The omens came soon when Miedema used her power to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot off target. Lauren Hemp was at the heart of everything early on, taking advantage of the room left by Riviere down United’s right side. Her crosses were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg scrambled off the line.

The Red Devils had a number of forays forward, their long-ball tactic giving them choices in the wings but they could not challenge Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, dominated possession, taunting their opponents and trying to lure them of their organization.

Triple Strike

They turned chances into goals with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A delivery to the far post was headed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was City’s seventh goal from a cross of the campaign.

They increased their lead with two more goals just before the interval. When Rose was permitted to maraud through the middle from defense, the pitch became spacious for the hosts. The key Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before sending a precise low cross for Shaw to bundle home. A short time later, they had a third after a rapid turnover in possession saw Lauren Hemp given the space to strike a shot home from outside the box.

After the Break

The clearest change came from the United manager at the interval as Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the contest. Ex- City player Park came most likely to score, striking the upright, but the away team were lacking in ideas and were unable to register a single shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have extended their lead when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to beat any side who finished above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to place them in a commanding standing after nine games.
